Robert Bellarmine was born in 1542 at Montepulciano in Tuscany. He entered the Society of Jesus and after ordination, distinguished himself by brilliant disputations in defense of the Catholic faith. He also taught theology in the Roman College. He was later created a cardinal and was briefly archbishop of Capua. He solved many pressing questions in the various Roman Congregations. He died in Rome in 1621. He was canonised in 1930 and was declared a Doctor of the Church in 1931. – CTS New Daily Roman Missal 2012, p 3001; Christian Prayer 1990, p 1231-32
