Martha was a sister of Mary and Lazarus. Her house at Bethany was often visited by the Lord, who encouraged her to unite busy life of work with a life of contemplation (Lk 10:38-42). She begged the Lord to raise her brother from the dead. It was to her that the Lord revealed himself as the resurrection and the life (Jn 11:19-27). Tradition says that she was eventually driven out of Palestine and settled in Provence France. – CTS New Daily Roman Missal 2012, p 2858; Christian Prayer 1990, p 1179
