BBKK Division Celebrates Founder’s Day
KOTA KINABALU – The Boys’ Brigade Kota Kinabalu (BBKK) Division celebrated its Founder’s Day on 24 Sept 2016 at All Saints Cathedral here.
Some 350 members and officers from the KK Division, comprising 2nd KK, 3rd KK, 4th KK, 10th KK, 11th KK and 12th KK Companies.
The Boys’ Brigade Founder’s Day is celebrated annually to commemorate the life and the work of the founder, William Alexander Smith, a Sunday School teacher at a Presbyterian Church near Glasgow. He founded the BB, combining discipline with Christian formation for teenaged members during the Industrial Revolution in the 19th century.
Guest of honour Rev David Wong represented the Anglican Bishop of Sabah. Rev Wong gave an inspiring sharing to those present based on the 2016 BB Sabah theme Building Up (Neh 2: 18). He said “that we need to Rise Up, Build Up and Work Up for the BB Ministry and for the Kingdom of God”.
As guest of honour, he received the general salute and inspected the Guard of Honour comprising 43 BB Members and three Officers from KK Division of the Boys’ Brigade in Malaysia (BBM).
Two boys, Senior Athanasius Lin Zhan Mao, 12, (3rd KKC) and Junior Sean Ho (2nd KKC) shared what they like about the BB.
Captain Neil Mah (11th KKC) shared that the objective of the BB is the “advancement of Christ’s Kingdom amongst boys and the promotion of obedience, reverence, discipline, self-respect and all that tends towards a true Christian manliness.”
The 11th KK is the second Catholic BBKK in Sabah. The first is the 4th KKC under the Sacred Heart Cathedral which started in April 1982. Its founding Chaplain was the late Fr Tobias Chi. Among 4th KKC’s past BB members include Fr Ernesto Lagan, Fr Samuel Lim (Singapore Archdiocese) and Fr Francisco Jude Basnayake, OFM whose priestlyl ordination was held in Stella Maris in January this year
Dr Chong Siaw Fung, the Organising Chairman of the BB Sabah 50th Anniversary Camp, encouraged all members to attend the camp next year. He said that some 600 local and overseas BB campers are expected at the camp next year.
There were three special BB Award recipients. Private Athanasius Lin of 3rd KKC was awarded the Junior Gold Award. Corporal Wong Yi Heng and Staff Sergeant Nixon Chong, both from the 3rd KK Company were the recipients of the President’s badge, the second highest award for Senior Section in the Boys’ Brigade in Malaysia.
