Ipoh’s longest serving La Sallian Brother Vincent dies at 87
IPOH: The longest serving La Sallian brother who taught at SMK St Michael Ipoh in the late 1950s has died.
Brother Director Datuk Brother Vincent J. Corkery passed away at 12.18 pm at a private hospital here on 22 March 2016. He was 87 years old.
In 1958, Brother Vincent was posted to the St Michael’s Institution here.
In addition to teaching English, Literature and History to Form Six students, Brother Vincent was also the Brother Sub-Director of St Michael’s.
He was appointed Brother Director in 1971, taking over from Brother Ultan Paul.
As Brother Director, Brother Vincent decided to do away with streaming according to academic ability and introduced mixed ability classes, which is practised at St Michael’s till this very day.
Another La Sallian Brother, Brother Matthew Bay said the passing of Brother Vincent was a great loss to the institution.
He described Brother Vincent as a nice, caring, concerned, and a simple person, who was very much involved in poetry and literature works.
Wake services would be held Tuesday night (March 22) and Wednesday (March 23) at 8 pm at the St Michael’s Church.
Funeral Mass would be held on Thursday (March 24) at 10.30 am at the church followed by burial at the cemetery. – thestaronline.com.my
