He was born in 634 and worked as a shepherd in Northumbria until he joined the monastic community at Melrose under St Eata. He moved to Lindisfarne and did much to spread the Gospel in the area, before embracing the eremitical life on the isle of Farne. In 684 he became bishop of Hexham, but quickly exchanged Sees with St Eata, who was by now bishop of Lindisfarne. He was known for the holiness of his life and his many miracles. He died in 687. Buried originally at Lindisfarne, his body was later translated to Durham and found to be incorrupt. – CTS New Daily Roman Missal 2012, p 2969
