KOTA KINABALU – Liew Matriarch Philomena Wong Yee Yi celebrated her 80th birthday on 22 July 2017.

Born on 20 July 1937, Wong is married to the late Peter Liew and borne him four children: Lena, Lorna (D), Bernard, and Edward.

Widowed early, she brought up her children to be strong and God-fearing people and active church members.  She is a cancer survivor and a model of prayer to her grandchildren.

Archbishop John Wong presided at the Chinese Thanksgiving Mass held at the Sacred Heart Cathedral Karamunsing, organised by her children, children-in-law, and 12 grandchildren.

Joining them were the matriarch’s three sisters, relatives, members of the Chinese Legion of Mary, Chinese Intercessory Group, and the Light of Jesus Christ Covenant Community.

After Mass, the group adjourned to the right wing of the parish centre for refreshments.

In the evening, over a hundred people turned up for the dinner held at a local hotel downtown.  A video clip on the life and times of the matriarch was screened, followed by choral presentations and testimonies by the children and grandchildren.
