Cathedral parish celebrates 35th dedication anniversary quietly
KOTA KINABALU – Sacred Heart Cathedral Parish here celebrated its 35th dedication anniversary quietly on 19-20 Nov 2016.
Archbishop John Wong presided at the Mass Nov 19 which was concelebrated with Fr Rhobby Mojolou.
After Mass key parish group/community leaders and members (including from Church of Mary Immaculate) adjourned to the canteen for a fellowship meal with the archbishop and his assistants. It was also his pastoral visit to the parish.
In his brief address at the fellowship, the prelate thanked those present for coming and he exhorted them to work together (over 70 groups/ministries/communities) for the good of the parish community.
He then exhorted them with his signature 12 words in groups of four for easy recall: (1) Read the Bible; (2) Receive the Sacaments; (3) Obey the Commandments; and (4) Go and Evangelise.
In his welcoming speech, Jason Joenoi, chairman of the cathedral parish pastoral council, expressed his disappointment with the meagre response of the groups to tackle the three pressing issues of the archdiocese.
However, Joenoi informed those present about the forthcoming seminars to be held in 2017 on the pressing challenges faced by the church: Jan 12-15 (BM), Feb 16-19 (English). The date for the seminar in Chinese will be fixed at a later date. It was further explained by Dr Jeffrey Soon of the Apologetics Ministry.
A slideshow on the parish’s growth and development in the past 35 years was screened before the dismissal at the 7 am, 9 am and 10:45 am Masses Nov 20.
